About Sharon

EXPERIENCE, DEDICATION AND LEADERSHIP

I am pleased to have been re-elected in November 2014 to continue to serve the citizens of this diverse, wonderful district in the Senate.   I served in the House of Representatives from November 2007 to December 2010, and then became your State Senator.  I previously worked in finance, as a community and environmental leader and chief aide to councilmember Dow Constantine.  I am a Maury Island resident and mother of two grown daughters.  I know first hand the challenges facing our district and region in issues like transportation, land use, and education.  I have taken on powerful special interests, including payday lenders and a multinational mining company,  to protect not only my neighbors, but citizens across the state.

I began my career in finance, rising to a level of Vice-President at Bank of America.  This strong foundation has helped me work on the State’s budget shortfall this past session, as well as coordinate with allies on a revenue package.

I became politically active in 1996 after our septic system failed nine months after our house was built. I was appointed to a Governor’s Task Force on On-Site Sewage as a consumer advocate.  I worked with industry, as well as local governments, and we successfully passed legislation to protect homeowners with these systems.

In 1997, I commenced an ongoing fight to stop a multinational mining corporation seeking to strip mine Maury Island.  After forming Preserve Our Islands, an environmental non-profit, I worked to build a coalition that included the Washington Environmental Council, People for Puget Sound and the League of Women Voters.  In 2010 I secured $15 million in funding for the potential acquisition of the property and in December 2010 the acquisition was finalized, with assistance from King County Executive Dow Constantine and the County Council.

Working as a consumer advocate and environmental leader, I have had the privilege to work on the reform of the payday lending industry in Olympia.  During 2009, while I served in the House of Representatives, we passed significant reform legislation to prevent working families from falling into a vicious cycle of debt.

As we approach the 2015 legislative session,  I will continue to bring experience, proven leadership and a strong commitment that Olympia must better reflect our progressive agenda on social, environmental, and health issues.

I have been honored to serve you in the Washington State Senate  and look forward to serving you in the years ahead.  Thank you all for your support in the 2014 general election!
